■ PORCELAIN VENEERS

Porcelain veneers are slender shells of porcelain (or other material) that are bonded to the outward-facing surfaces of teeth to improve their appearance. Veneers can be used to cover whitening-resistant teeth, crooked teeth, and to cosmetically correct misshapen teeth and gaps between teeth (diastema). One of the great things about the latest veneer options is that they are taking advantage of state-of-the-art materials research to improve appearance, durability, and longevity. Today’s veneers are practically indistinguishable from natural teeth.

■ COMPOSITE VENEERS

Composite veneers are made from a resin material. For those who aren't too sure what resin is, it's a plastic material. These types of veneers are shaped freehand directly onto the teeth, have a lifespan of two to five years and are a less costly material compared to porcelain.

■ COSMETIC TEETH WHITENING

Teeth whitening can remove stains from habits like drinking coffee or wine, but it won't work on all types of discoloration. For example, teeth with gray tones may not bleach at all, and whitening won't work on fillings, crowns, veneers, or caps. It also won't be effective if discoloration is caused by medications or a tooth injury.

During your initial consultation, at Empress Smiles, you will be asked questions about what you are looking to achieve through cosmetic dentistry. You will then be given recommendations based on your desired results.

You can choose to have teeth that are more squared off, more rounded, or more pointed — the choice is totally yours. You'll be given recommendations to help you narrow down your options. If you are happy with the style, the Empress Smiles staff will then schedule you in for an appointment.

To accommodate the added thickness of your veneers, your existing teeth may be shaved and or reshaped to ensure proper adhesion with the veneers.

Once your permanent veneers are ready, they will be tinted to match the surrounding teeth (or your chosen shade). Your teeth will be cleaned and a special bonding agent will be applied to ensure the longevity of your veneers. The bonding cement is then cured with a specialized UV light.

Once your veneers have been bonded, you can finally see how they look in real life. If you're happy with the results, you can head off to share your smile with the world. The process can happen in only one visit.
